Schiehallion

April 12, 2009

Another perfect day for a walk – although you wouldn’t know it from the picture below!

Schiehallion “Fairy Hill of the Caledonians” (745m) has a fascinating history and has a relative easy ascent which is why it’s no surprise that thousands of people climb it each year. 1_schiehallion1It was quite the tourist trap on the sunny Easter weekend we decided to climb it. I guess the joy of this mountain is that dogs, kids and elderly people can get to the top and enjoy the stunning views of Perthshire and beyond.

Interestingly, because of it’s distinct shape, Schiehallion was instrumental in an 18th century experiment to measure the mass of the earth. Later, through these experiments contour lines were devised.

There is a path virtually all the way to the top built by the John Muir Trust so the walk is very straightforward; I will let the pictures do the talking this time. Group photo taken by Karen.
